The Pittsburgh Pirates were installed as huge home favorites over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, a market move that put the focus on a 6:45 p.m. ET first pitch at PNC Park. Jared Jones is scheduled to start for Pittsburgh, with Ryan Johnson on the mound for Los Angeles.
The reason the line leaned so hard toward the Pirates is easy to see. Los Angeles has been the weakest offense in the league by wOBA this season and sat 29th in xwOBA over the past 30 days, while Pittsburgh had powered the league in wOBA against right-handers. Neil Parker’s view was that Pittsburgh runs up the score in Friday’s series opener, and the numbers back up the case for a home edge.
Jones has been better than his 4.83 ERA suggests, with a 3.84 xERA and 3.83 xFIP across 18 starts, but that does not make him untouchable. He had still given up three or more runs in four of his past six starts, and he missed all of last season after an internal brace procedure following a barking elbow in 2025. That creates a narrower margin for a Pirates club that has gone Over the number in 20 of its past 35 home games.
Johnson brings the opposite profile. His 5.53 xERA, 5.54 xFIP and 16.5% strikeout rate point to a pitcher who has struggled to miss bats and keep traffic off the bases, even before considering a Los Angeles offense that has won just 16 of its last 50 road games. Brandon Lowe’s split numbers and Johnson’s.193 ISO allowed to left-handed hitters were also part of the handicap, adding another reason the matchup tilted toward Pittsburgh.
Weather could still be the one wrinkle. High humidity was expected to make the air dense at PNC Park, and there was a 45% to 55% chance of scattered thunderstorms and light rain later in the evening. If the game starts on time, Pittsburgh has the clearest path to control it. If the rain arrives, the betting angle does not change much; it only sharpens the question of how long Friday’s opener will stay on the field.
