That kind of turnover is what keeps this game from feeling fully predictable. Akron has four transfers starting on defense, Jordan Gant is back in the backfield after averaging 4.8 yards per carry and scoring six touchdowns last year, and Tom Luginbill pointed to Poffenbarger as a possible help while noting how much change is around him. Wake Forest brings a little more expected strength into the matchup, but both teams arrive with enough moving parts that a clean script is hard to trust in Week 1.
What comes next matters almost as much as the opener. Wake Forest gets Purdue next week and Miami the following week, so this first game is less about settling the whole season than about finding an answer fast. If the Deacons want to move through that stretch with confidence, they need the quarterback and line changes to settle immediately, because the opening number is already telling the same story the schedule does: the margin for early mistakes is thin.
