A persistent ridge of high pressure will keep the southern and central United States hot and dry through most of next week, with temperatures running in the upper 90s and, in a few spots, just over 100° through next Wednesday.
That is why today weather is drawing attention now: people in the region are looking at several more days of heat with very little to hope for in the way of rain. There is simply no reason to be optimistic about getting rain any time soon, and the forecast leaves it out until the pattern shows more reliable signs of change.
The setup is not a one-day event. It is an ongoing hot, dry pattern, and the dry stretch is adding to worsening drought. Long-range model ensembles keep the same pattern locked in through mid-September, which matters because it stretches the period of heat and moisture shortage far beyond the next few days.
There is still one small wrinkle in the forecast. Models have repeatedly hinted at a storm or two in the day 4-6 timeframe, only to push that chance back or remove it the next day. For now, the more consistent signal is heat, dry air and little meaningful rain relief.
The practical answer is plain enough: unless the larger pattern shifts in a more reliable way, the southern and central United States will stay hot, dry and rain-starved through next Wednesday and likely beyond that.
