The Secret Woman will arrive on Netflix on 28 August, putting a Danish thriller built around amnesia, mistaken identity and a late-breaking DNA test in front of a wider audience.
That matters because the film gives viewers a fixed date for a story that depends on surprise. Natalie Wolfsberg Madueño plays Louise, a woman preparing to marry Joachim after living with no memory of the life she had before she ran an idyllic rural cafe in Norway. When a tourist calls her by another name, she takes a DNA test and learns she is really Helene Söderberg, a Danish shipping heiress presumed dead.
The film is adapted from Anna Ekberg’s 2017 novel, though Anna Ekberg is actually a male writing duo. It also stars Claes Bang as Edmund and Stina Ekblad as his mother, with Pål Sverre Hagen as Joachim. The setup gives the movie a tidy hook: a woman who has built a new life suddenly learns she may have had an entirely different one, including a husband and son back home.
What gives the story its sharper edge is how the past reaches her. Helene was found stowed away on a cargo ship before she handed over an ID card for Louise Anderson, which authorities accepted, and that is how she ended up living as Louise. The film also leans into human trafficking, which makes her disappearance feel less like a puzzle box and more like a crime with consequences.
There is, however, an immediate drawback to the cat-and-mouse game. Edmund’s bad faith is signalled early, which takes some of the pressure off his attempts to gaslight her. Instead of leaving viewers guessing whether he is hiding something, the film lets that part of the mystery harden too soon. Still, the central question remains plain enough: if Louise is Helene, then what happened to the life she left behind, and why did it take a stranger’s voice to force her to ask?
