The New York Jets signed Troy Reeder to their practice squad, a move that gives them another veteran inside linebacker and could push him toward the active roster sooner rather than later. Connor Hughes reported the signing.
That matters because the Jets have little depth behind Demario Davis and Jamien Sherwood, and Reeder’s path is easy to see: if the team needs another body in the middle, he is already in the building. Davis is 37 years old, while Sherwood is coming off his worst season after signing a huge contract, which only makes the need for insurance more urgent.
Reeder arrives with a seven-year NFL career that has mostly been spent in Los Angeles. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Delaware in 2019 with the Los Angeles Rams, spent six seasons with that team, and had a brief stint with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022 before ending up available again after failing to make the Detroit Lions' 53-man roster.
The appeal is not hard to understand, even if the fit is imperfect. Reeder’s PFF grades were 45.7 in 2023 and 57.9 in 2024, and he has struggled at times in coverage. That is why the move looks less like a statement about his ceiling than a practical answer to a depth problem the Jets could not ignore. The signing also comes with Trevin Wallace, the former Carolina Panthers third-round pick, joining the practice squad, giving the Jets another name to work with at the same position.
What makes Reeder interesting now is the gap between where he signed and where he could wind up. The Jets are treating him like depth for the practice squad today, but the roster behind Davis and Sherwood is thin enough that a promotion would not be a surprise. The question is not whether the opening exists. It is whether Reeder gets the call when the Jets decide they need a No. 3 inside linebacker.
