Malachi Nelson injury update: Steve Angeli gets PRP shot as Syracuse waits

Steve Angeli got a PRP injection in the same Achilles tendon he tore against Clemson last year, a sign Syracuse is trying to speed up a return that has already been delayed by two games. Angeli was back on the practice field and close to coming back, but the move shows the Orange are still weighing how much to push him after surgery.

That matters now because Syracuse has cycled through eight players under center since September 20, 2025, and the quarterback room has not stopped taking hits. Amari Odom and Malachi Nelson are both dealing with upper-body injuries, which leaves the offense even thinner while Angeli works back from the injury that changed his season.

The treatment itself is part of the story. PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is meant to use a patient’s own blood components to help an injured area heal, and Angeli received it in the same repaired Achilles that required surgery after the Clemson injury. Martin O'Malley was the doctor who performed that surgery, according to reports, and Angeli returned to practice roughly six months later, calling the recovery successful. For Syracuse, that is a meaningful step. The team has managed just one win over a Power Four opponent over the past two seasons, and every practice rep at quarterback carries extra weight.

But the caution is built into the situation too. Angeli is close enough to returning that the conversation has shifted from whether he can practice to whether he should be rushed back, and that is not a small distinction after an Achilles repair. Push too hard, too soon, and Syracuse risks losing him again; hold him back, and the offense remains stuck in the same injury-driven carousel that has already forced the team to keep searching for answers. The next test is simple to state and hard to solve: whether Angeli is ready to play before the quarterback room is fully healthy around him.
