J.J. McCarthy is expected to make the Minnesota Vikings' initial 53-man roster for the 2026 season, even as his place on the team had been in doubt. That is why his future is drawing so much attention now. McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, was viewed as a possible cut candidate before the deadline, and the report landed while the Vikings were still sorting out what their quarterback room should look like.

He also said the Vikings have Carson Wentz and may want to keep Wentz as the No. 2 and McCarthy as the No. 3, which leaves the team with a straightforward but uncomfortable choice if no trade materializes: keep the young quarterback on the roster or move on from a player it invested a first-round pick in.
The wider picture is part of what made the report land so hard. Minnesota has built offense around Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Aaron Jones and T.J. Hockenson, which raises the cost of getting the quarterback spot wrong. For McCarthy, Sunday was not just another roster day.
