The New York Giants came out of Monday’s waiver cycle with nothing. They were not awarded a single player, even though they held the fifth priority in the order.
That is why Cameron Latu is being searched now: the waiver deadline hit after teams had to set 53-man rosters on Sunday, and the Giants were still looking for help when the claims were announced. Instead, the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans were all ahead of them in the order, and New England wound up taking former Giants linebacker Darius Muasau.
Muasau was a 2024 sixth-round pick who spent two years with the Giants and made 18 starts. The Patriots claimed him on Monday, while the Raiders were awarded Darrell Luter, the Jets claimed Blake Grupe and Trevin Wallace, and the Titans took Owen Pappoe, Melvin Smith and Nazir Stackhouse. The Miami Dolphins also were awarded seven players with the 11th priority, showing just how active the day was for teams building out their rosters.
What the Giants did not do matters almost as much as what the other clubs did. They had the fifth waiver position and still left the day without an addition, which leaves open the most basic question from the process: whether they submitted claims on any of the players that went to the teams in front of them. That part was not known.
New York is still building its 17-man practice squad, but Monday offered no waiver rescue. The club lost a young defender it had drafted last year and did not replace him on the spot, which makes the next roster move more important than the one that just passed.
