The Philadelphia Eagles are down to the final stretch before their 53-player cutdown, and a recent roster projection has them carrying Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee and Cole Payton at quarterback. With the deadline set for 6:00 PM Eastern on Sunday, August 30, the projection points to a team that is close to its initial regular-season shape but not done sorting through the edges.
That matters now because the preseason schedule is over, the roster clock is running, and this is the point when every extra spot has to be earned. The projection also puts Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley in the backfield, with DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, Makai Lemon, Hollywood Brown, Darius Cooper and Elijah Moore at receiver, giving a clearer picture of who is expected to survive the first wave of cuts.
The quarterback call is the one that will draw the most attention. Hurts is the starter, but his summer included a lot of interceptions, McKee had a rough camp after earlier signs of progress, and Dalton looked somewhat physically diminished. Even so, the projection still keeps McKee and Cole Payton, which says as much about the lack of a clean backup answer as it does about either player’s grip on a job.
Payton helped his case by showing some promise and getting work on special teams in the final preseason game. The running back group tells a different story, with Barkley likely to be more involved as a pass-catcher this year and Bigsby’s role narrowed because Barkley is ahead of him. Shipley, meanwhile, finished camp strong, and the Eagles rested him in the third preseason game, a sign that he may already have done enough to stick for now.
There is still a difference between the initial roster projection and the roster that will actually stand when the deadline arrives. Players can still end up on injured reserve, be traded, or land on waivers before Week 1 against the Washington Commanders, so the list that goes in before Sunday evening may not be the one that opens the season. That is why the projection is useful but not final: it shows where the Eagles are leaning, not where they have finished.
The most striking part of the forecast is that it keeps three quarterbacks even while admitting the depth behind Hurts has not been inspiring. That is usually the kind of problem a team solves by keeping the safest hands on deck, and right now the Eagles seem prepared to do that while leaving themselves room to change course before the season begins.
