Denise Gomes enters UFC Shanghai as a betting-model underdog who is still projected to beat Yan Xiaonan, with a 63% win probability attached to her name. The UFC’s early card in Shanghai now turns on that main event, where the 26-year-old Gomes arrives on a four-fight win streak and listed at +130.
That number matters because Gomes is not being picked as a flier. She has a 6-2 record since entering the promotion in 2022, recently outpointed Tecia Pennington, and brings three knockout wins across eight UFC bouts. Yan Xiaonan, by contrast, is the more familiar name, a former title challenger who took Weili Zhang to a unanimous decision in 2024, owns a win over Mackenzie Dern, and has generally faced the tougher slate.
The contrast is clear in the deeper numbers too. Gomes and Xiaonan share a 63-inch reach, but Xiaonan carries a three-inch height advantage and the cleaner résumé against elite opposition. Even so, the model still sides with Gomes. She has a 59% xR% to Xiaonan’s 58%, lands 4.02 significant strikes per minute, and posts a +0.95 differential while absorbing 3.07 per minute. Xiaonan lands more, at 4.69 per minute with a +1.46 differential, but she also absorbs 3.23 and has only one UFC finish across 13 fights.
That is the part that makes the matchup less tidy than the name value suggests. Xiaonan returns at 37 years old after a 16-month layoff that began after her April 2025 decision loss to Virna Jandiroba, and she has gone 3-4 since 2021 after opening her UFC run with six straight wins. Gomes is younger, busier and statistically hard to dismiss: she spends 42% of her time at distance, yet also shows a 52% control rate in clinch and ground exchanges, with 10 takedowns at 34% accuracy and 30% of her fight time in control positions. Xiaonan’s 73% takedown accuracy is sharper, but nearly half of those takedowns came against a single opponent.
That leaves the main event with a real betting split and a real sporting one. Xiaonan still has the stronger strength of schedule, but the model’s view is that Gomes’ pace, durability and current form are enough to make her a Tier 1 Live Dog at +130. On a card that also leads into Umar Nurmagomedov and Song Yadong, the Shanghai main event is the fight that could tell whether Gomes is simply in form or ready to force her way into a higher tier.
