Ross Chastain is out of Friday night’s O'Reilly Series regular season finale at Daytona. His start at Iowa Speedway in the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet was his 10th O'Reilly Series race of the season, and that pushed him past the limit for Cup Series drivers in the field.
That matters now because the race is the last stop before the playoffs are set, which gives the cutoff at Daytona more weight than a routine summer entry. Chastain, a full-time Cup Series driver for Trackhouse Racing, had taken full advantage of NASCAR’s loosened rules for drivers with at least three years of experience in O'Reilly Series and Craftsman Truck Series races, and he did it often enough to become one of the few Cup regulars with a real presence in both series this year.
His Iowa run was part of a sharp stretch in the lower series. Chastain finished third at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in late July, when Carson Kvapil won for JR Motorsports ahead of Justin Allgaier, with Chase Elliott fourth. He returned to the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet at Iowa and finished fourth, while Kvapil won again, Rajah Caruth was second and Williams Sawalich broke up the JRM group in third.
The wrinkle is that the same openness that let Chastain keep showing up also drew a hard line at the finish. NASCAR’s rules allow those drivers to compete more freely during the season, but Cup Series drivers are ineligible for Friday night’s finale, and Chastain’s 10th O'Reilly Series start arrived just in time to shut the door on Daytona. He also ran eight Craftsman Truck Series races this year, underscoring how fully he used the exception while it lasted.
What comes next is narrower than the schedule around him. Chastain is locked out of the regular season finale, and there is no indication in the available record that he will add another O'Reilly Series start after Daytona.
