Minneapolis will mark the one-year remembrance for Harper And Fletcher on Thursday, Aug. 27, with a day of service and remembrance at Pearl Park. The event will include planting flowers and trees, assembling care kits for youth and collecting school supplies, as the Annunciation community looks to honor Harper Moyski and Fletcher Merkel.
The day is being hosted by Ilhan Omar, Emma Greenman and Jamison Whiting, with support from Zaynab Mohamed, Marion Greene, Lori Norvell and Kay Carvajal Moran. The public mark is one part of a broader effort to remember the people killed and injured in the Aug. 27, 2025 shooting at the Church of the Annunciation, which left Fletcher and Harper dead and injured 29 others.
The remembrance is landing now because the anniversary has arrived, and the community is asking for a visible show of support that does not cross into the church’s private life. Residents are being asked to place two candles or lights in their windows in memory of Harper and Fletcher, and churches are encouraged to ring their bells at 8:26 a.m. on Aug. 27, while all Annunciation events at the church remain private and closed to the general public and the media.
That split tells the story of this moment. The Annunciation community is inviting the wider city into service, prayer and tribute, but it is also drawing a firm line around its own worship and gatherings. People are being asked not to send stuffed animals, flowers, food or other physical donations, with support instead directed to the Annunciation Hope and Healing Fund - Catholic Community Foundation.
The next public step comes even sooner. The City Council plans to honor the victims, survivors and families at the Committee of the Whole on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 1:30 p.m., and it plans to adopt an honorary resolution recognizing the Annunciation community’s resilience, strength, faith and kindness. By the time Aug. 27 arrives, the city will have already set its tribute in motion, but the community itself will decide how close the public gets.
