Walmart and Sam’s Club will begin adding Tap to Pay at select stores and clubs on Aug. 24, giving customers and members another way to pay at checkout. The contactless option will join existing payment methods and is set to spread beyond the first locations over time.
The timing matters because the rollout starts now, even as Walmart says it wants Tap to Pay in all Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations in the U.S. by the end of 2026. For shoppers, the change means a faster checkout option that works with eligible contactless cards, phones or smartwatches, and can also use eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards added to digital wallets.
Tap to Pay is being added as another familiar option alongside cash, credit card and Walmart Pay. At Sam’s Club, members already have Scan & Go, which lets them scan and pay as they shop, so the new feature builds on a checkout system that is already moving toward more self-directed payments.
The rollout still begins in only select stores and clubs, which leaves the first wave of locations unspecified even as the company maps out a full expansion. That gap matters because the plan also reaches fuel stations, but not until mid-2027, making the move to contactless payment a staged rollout rather than an immediate systemwide shift.
For now, the clearest takeaway is that the first change lands on Aug. 24, and the larger shift is already on the calendar. Walmart and Sam’s Club are not just adding a new payment method; they are setting a timeline for making it part of everyday checkout across their U.S. network.
