Airbnb New Rules Ban Hosts From Requiring Cleaning Chores

Airbnb is changing what hosts can ask guests to do before checkout, banning required chores that would normally be handled by a cleaner. Starting with bookings made on or after November 20, hosts can no longer require guests to strip beds, take trash offsite or wash and put away dishes, a move that narrows one of the most complained-about parts of a stay.

The timing matters because the company sent the new policy to hosts on Wednesday, and the countdown has already begun for every future booking that falls under it. Guests have complained for years about paying cleaning fees and then being told to finish a list of chores anyway, and the new Airbnb rules answer that grievance more directly than any prior reminder or house guideline.

Airbnb also said hosts cannot dodge the policy by moving cleaning instructions into the Requests section of a listing. Simon Letouze, speaking for the company, said hosts can still make reasonable requests, such as asking guests to place dirty dishes in the sink, take short showers where drought restrictions apply, or put trash in bear-proof containers. That line is where the new policy starts to matter in practice: Airbnb is allowing requests tied to common-sense use of a property, while drawing a hard line against chores that belong to a cleaner.

That line is already irritating many hosts, who reacted angrily online after the announcement and argued they need room to protect their homes and investments. Airbnb is not backing away from the restriction. It will also ban hosts from requiring separate contracts on November 20, with narrow exceptions for local legal requirements, longer stays or access to an optional amenity such as a golf cart rental.

Hosts who ignore either policy can be warned, have their listings removed or be banned from the platform entirely. The unresolved question is not whether the rules arrive on November 20; it is how consistently Airbnb will police the gray area between a reasonable request and a prohibited chore across the requests that hosts keep trying to write into a stay.
