Angel City Football Club takes its four-match unbeaten run into Wednesday’s meeting with the North Carolina Courage, but the more telling number is still the same: four straight draws. The teams meet at 5 p.m. PT on Aug. 26 at First Horizon Stadium, with Angel City trying to turn recent steadiness into three points after a 0-0- and 1-1-type stretch that has kept it from fully cashing in.
The matchup is already drawing attention because it is the second meeting between the sides this season, and the first went to the Courage, 2-1, at BMO Stadium on May 31. Maiara Niehues scored Angel City’s lone goal that day, and now the club gets another chance to answer a result that left it chasing from behind in the season series.
That search comes at a time when Angel City has at least shown it can avoid defeat. In Sunday’s draw with Gotham, Angelina Anderson was decisive again, saving a penalty in the 87th minute and finishing a night in which she also denied Sam Kerr in the 58th minute and stopped Jordynn Dudley in the 72nd. No one has scored a penalty kick against her this season, and Angel City led Gotham in shots on target, 2-1, and total shots, 8-4, in the first half.
The problem is that unbeaten has not meant upward movement. Four consecutive draws keep Angel City from losing, but they also keep it from stacking the points that matter most in the NWSL standings. That is why Wednesday feels like more than another midweek fixture: a team that has been hard to beat still has not separated itself from the pack.
The Courage arrive with their own momentum after beating the Boston Legacy, 2-1, on Aug. 22. Ashley Sanchez scored her 12th and 13th goals of the season in that match and moved to the top of the Golden Boot race, while also leaving herself one goal short of the Courage single-season scoring record. For Angel City, that is the other edge of the matchup — a team still searching for its first win in five weeks against one that has a forward in form.
Angel City will also have Savy King available for her third consecutive appearance after she missed four months because of injury. She returned against the Washington Spirit on Aug. 16 and then made her second appearance by entering in the 68th minute against Gotham, another small sign that the roster is beginning to come back together. Leif Smerud has said the group is difficult to beat and that more players returning increases competition for the Starting 11, but the larger test is whether that depth can finally convert close games into wins.
Wednesday’s answer matters because the schedule does not wait for a team that keeps drawing. Angel City has allowed 20 goals through 19 matches this season, and if the club wants this unbeaten run to mean something more than survival, it needs to break the pattern at First Horizon Stadium.
