Richard Petty rode on Air Force One with Donald Trump on Tuesday, then stepped off the plane with him and later appeared onstage at a rally in Greenville, North Carolina. The 89-year-old racing icon was posted beside Trump in photos shared on his social media accounts before the pair reached the rally.
Trump brought Petty onstage and made the introduction in the language of a crowd pleaser, calling him a legend and inviting him up as “The King.” Petty answered in kind, telling the crowd he would look at the race “from a racing standpoint” and that the country was in “a big race,” with Trump cast as the driver and the public as the pit crew.
That framing fit Petty’s public identity as one of the most decorated figures in NASCAR. He has 200 Cup wins, the most all-time, and seven titles, tied for the most with Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jimmie Johnson. He is from Randleman and still lives there now, which gives his appearance in North Carolina a home-state cast that was hard to miss.
The rally itself was not just a tribute stop. It was part of Trump’s effort to build support for Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley, which made Petty’s appearance carry a political edge even as he spoke like a racer. He praised Trump as “a big racing fan,” said he would use him as the driver, and told supporters to find “the very best pit crew” if they wanted to win.
That mix of admiration and campaign politics is what made the appearance stand out. Petty has spoken at rallies with Trump before, and the two have also been spotted together at NASCAR races Trump attended, but the combination of an Air Force One ride and a stage appearance on Oct. 20 put the relationship in sharper focus. Trump later called Petty’s pit crew comparison “pretty cool” and, after he left the stage, described him as “a true legend and a great guy respected by everybody.”
Petty’s latest appearance leaves one simple question hanging over the moment: not whether he is willing to show up for Trump, but how often the campaign will keep putting the sport’s most famous name into the center of its political stage.
