Real Madrid have spent 125 matches waiting for Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior to turn star power into a true two-man threat, and the numbers still say they have not done it. Since the pair first appeared together on 14 August 2024, only 19 of Real Madrid's 192 goals in those games have come from direct collaboration between them.
That is why the partnership keeps drawing attention now. The two started 89 of those 125 matches and, even with that amount of time on the pitch, their direct link has produced only 9.8% of the team's goals in that span. Real Madrid have scored 269 goals since Mbappé arrived, which makes the gap between output and chemistry even harder to ignore.
Vinicius Junior has been the main starting point for the shared goals they have managed. He set up most of the attacks that Mbappé finished, with 15 direct contributions from Vinicius to Mbappé's goals, and three of those came from penalties Vinicius won. Last season, their connection was stronger, producing nine goals in total, with seven of those starts coming from Vinicius and two from Mbappé.
Even so, the larger problem remains unchanged. Real Madrid's biggest stars are also being described as the club's sharpest attacking weapons, yet the combination is still more promise than product. In the opening official match of the 2026-2027 campaign, neither player contributed directly to a goal, and both were said to look below par. That is a sharp reminder that Real Madrid are still leaning more on individual brilliance than on a partnership that works instinctively.
Jose Mourinho is now being asked to solve that. The task is not to find more quality, because both players have it in abundance, but to turn it into a collective force that behaves like one attack instead of two separate ones. Until that happens, the headline numbers will keep telling the same story: great players, plenty of games, and still not enough shared purpose.
