The Boston Celtics changed their roster on Saturday, waiving Milos Uzan, Hayden Gray, Gabe McGlothan and Tucker DeVries while signing Devin Carter to a two-way deal. The move tightens Boston’s Celtics depth chart and gives the team a low-cost way to evaluate a former first-round pick.

Carter was the 13th overall pick in the 2024 draft, and Boston can use him in up to 50 games on the two-way contract. That makes him a practical addition for a team trying to manage every slot on the roster while keeping its options open.

The timing matters because Saturday was the day the Celtics finalized the shape of the group around the regular roster. Uzan, Gray, McGlothan and DeVries are expected to join the Maine Celtics in the G League, leaving Boston with one clear new name to track as the roster settles in.

There is a catch, though. Carter is on a two-way deal, but his guaranteed rookie contract means he is still getting paid more than $5 million this season, while Boston will pay just under $700,000 for his services. That split makes him an unusual fit: a player carried on a discounted roster slot even though his original deal remains far more expensive than a typical two-way arrangement.

The financial logic is plain. The Celtics are $1.7 million below the luxury tax line and are trying to reset the repeater tax, so the move lets them keep flexibility while adding a player with real draft pedigree. What remains unclear is whether Carter spends time with the Maine Celtics in the G League or stays entirely with Boston, but Saturday’s move shows where the club wants the depth chart to point next.
