Robert Hill says his 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Jailbreak was destroyed after a dealership employee took it out during a July 3 service visit and crashed it hard enough to total the car. He says he spent roughly six hours waiting at Matt Bowers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge before learning what had happened.
That is why the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is drawing attention now: the car was not just damaged, it was a Last Call Hellcat Jailbreak, and Dodge ended Challenger production in 2023, so there is no new factory version waiting in the wings. Hill says the car was brought in for service, and he later learned an employee he described as an unqualified lube tech had taken it out. The Challenger was declared a total loss.
The financial fallout is where Hill says the deal stopped making sense. He says the insurance settlement paid off the outstanding portion of the car, but the money left over was not enough to recreate his original down payment and still keep monthly payments on a replacement at a manageable level. The dealership, he says, offered another vehicle at MSRP and waived a $25,000 markup, but even that would have left him worse off than before.
Hill says he used part of the insurance money to buy a more affordable vehicle while rebuilding his savings, because taking on a replacement that strained his budget would have made it harder to keep saving for a house. After the story spread through the Mopar community, he says a senior representative who believed the matter was already being handled contacted him and apologized for not reaching out sooner. Hill said the representative was very high up in the company, but he still has not said whether the final answer will restore the position he had before the crash.
