Uefa has introduced a new Champions League draw rule that will stop Liverpool from hosting Real Madrid at Anfield for a third straight league-phase season if the pair are drawn together again on Thursday. The same restriction also applies to Inter Milan and Arsenal, the only other fixture affected.
The change matters now because Liverpool, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Arsenal are all in pot one for the 2026-27 Champions League league phase draw, and the pairings will be set on Thursday. Under the new rule, if Liverpool and Real Madrid meet again, Liverpool cannot be the home team, while Inter Milan would also be blocked from hosting Arsenal again if that fixture is repeated.
That rule is narrow, but it is not cosmetic. It does not stop two clubs from being drawn against each other three seasons in a row. It only stops the same side from keeping the same home role in that fixture for three consecutive seasons. In practice, that means Uefa is trying to prevent the league phase from handing out the same home-and-away pattern year after year, even when the matchup itself remains possible.
The background is straightforward. The Champions League league phase began at the start of the 2024-25 season, and each team plays eight matches against eight different opponents, with one home and one away game against a team from each pot. Liverpool have hosted Real Madrid in the league phase in each of the last two seasons, winning 2-0 in 2024-25 and 1-0 in 2025-26. Inter Milan have done the same against Arsenal, beating them 1-0 two seasons ago before Arsenal won 3-1 last term.
Those repeated results are exactly why the new rule exists. Uefa has set the limit from this season onwards so the same home fixture cannot be repeated for three consecutive seasons, even though the clubs can still be paired again. That leaves Thursday’s draw with one clear question: whether the same matchups reappear, and if they do, which side is forced to switch venues. The answer will shape two of the competition’s most watched pairings before a ball is even kicked.
