Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro family on Wednesday, Sept. 9, putting its biggest phone launch of the year squarely back in the first full week after IFA Berlin. That timing matters because Apple’s premium phones have become the event other makers plan around, whether they want to or not.
The calendar is the story. IFA Berlin runs from Sept. 4 to Sept. 8 this year, and the next day Apple is expected to take over the conversation. Since 2005, IFA Berlin has taken place annually, but the show’s late-summer slot now sits inside Apple’s familiar launch window, when attention tends to shift fast toward the new iPhone release date.
That predictability has become one of Apple’s strongest tools. By keeping the premium iPhone launch in early September, Apple has effectively secured a last-mover advantage in the high-end market, leaving rivals to decide whether to move earlier, hold back or risk being drowned out. Samsung and Google are forced to compress their hardware release cycles to avoid direct marketing collisions with Apple, a scheduling problem that now shapes their own planning.
The pressure is not theoretical. Samsung has repeatedly delayed the Galaxy Z Foldable range to give it more time to become established before the iPhone arrives, and the gap can be brutally small for others. There are just two weeks between the reviews of the Pixel 11 Pro arriving and the reveal of the iPhone 18 Pro, leaving little room for a competitor to build momentum before Apple resets the conversation.
Apple’s timing also has a built-in contradiction. The company’s annual September rhythm makes it easy to anticipate, which helps it dominate the premium space, but that same predictability gives rivals advance notice and time to adjust around it. The vanilla iPhone 18 is said to be moving to spring 2027, widening the separation inside Apple’s own lineup and suggesting the company is comfortable letting its Pro models carry the spotlight for now.
If Apple does hold to Sept. 9, the next major marker is already set: a premium phone launch that arrives just after IFA Berlin ends and before competitors have much chance to recover the air.
