Multiple outlets also report that Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are planned to return as Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry, although the project still has not locked down its plot or full cast.
That makes the movie a live search again because the pairing that powered the 2003 hit is back at the center of the conversation. The original film turned Hudson and McConaughey into one of the era’s defining romantic-comedy duos, and McConaughey later said on Happy Sad Confused that it remains his favorite romcom and still brings in the biggest residual checks of his career, saying, “Every March I'd get a big check because Valentine's Day.”
Hudson has been pointing to that staying power for months. In April, she told Harper’s Bazaar that How to Lose a Guy feels like a classic now and that new generations keep finding it, which is part of why a sequel lands with real momentum today rather than as a nostalgia exercise that arrived too late. The new project also comes after years of attention to how hard it was to make the first film work in the first place.
Hudson said during a 2022 Life In Pictures talk at BAFTA in London that she had to fight for McConaughey to be cast, adding that “we just kept hitting our heads against the wall” and that “the studio and I weren’t agreeing.” She said she wanted to play with him because they had an energy together, calling it kinetic and describing both of them as competitive, athletic and driven to push each other. That backstory matters because it shows the sequel is being built around the same chemistry Hudson once had to argue to keep.
Still, the new version is only partly formed. The headline reunion is being discussed, but no one has confirmed the plot or the cast, which leaves the biggest question open: whether the sequel becomes a direct continuation of Andie and Ben’s story or something that simply borrows the title’s familiar rhythm.
