The Pittsburgh Steelers were shut out 17-0 by the New York Jets on Friday, a result that quickly turned a promising preseason quarterback debate back toward Mason Rudolph. After a 28-9 win against the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 13, the offense never found a foothold and the gap between the veterans and the young quarterbacks looked much wider.
The number that mattered most was not the score alone but the way the passing competition played out. Will Howard and Drew Allar combined for a 46.4 aggregate passer rating, and that kind of line does little to slow the view that Rudolph remains the safer answer behind Aaron Rodgers, the Steelers' 42-year-old starter. Rudolph's 8-5-1 career record for Pittsburgh gives that argument a simple logic: when the room gets shaky, the trusted hand rises.
The defense offered the clearest resistance. DeShon Elliott forced a fumble and finished with four overall tackles, including three solo stops, while Elandon Roberts entered in the third quarter and still ended with four solo tackles and five overall tackles. Roberts signed with the Steelers on Aug. 13 after spending last season with the Las Vegas Raiders, and his late arrival did not stop him from making an immediate impact.
That came in a game the Jets controlled without ever needing to do much. They scored touchdowns on their first and last offensive possessions and managed only five first downs and 143 yards over the nine drives between them. The Steelers, meanwhile, did not get the kind of outing that would settle anything in the quarterback room, especially after the offense looked sharper just eight days earlier.
Preseason football can swing hard from one week to the next, and this one did. The Steelers were encouraged by the previous win, but the shutout pushed the conversation back to the same place it has been circling: Rudolph looks like the calmest option, and the question is whether Howard and Allar have enough time left to change that before roster decisions harden.
