That finish matters because India had already built the day around Devdutt Padikkal, who made 117 from 168 balls and reached his second hundred in as many Tests. Shubman Gill added 50, Yashasvi Jaiswal made 45, and Padikkal shared a 120-run stand with Gill for the third wicket after being dropped on 0 and 1. By the time Jurel walked off unbeaten, India had already put enough on the board to keep the second and final Test moving on their terms.
The innings was not without a break in momentum. Rishabh Pant retired hurt on 3 after taking a blow on his forearm from Lahiru Kumara, a setback that forced the lower order to absorb more of the load than planned.
