The Oklahoma City Thunder are 8.5-point favorites over the Denver Nuggets for Thursday night at Paycom Center, with the total set at 236.5 for the 9:30 p.m. ET tipoff. That number invites a fast game on paper, but the setup also points in the other direction.

The reason this matchup draws attention now is simple: bettors are deciding whether a high total can survive two teams built to shape possessions. Oklahoma City owns a top-five defense, Denver used the seventh-highest volume of half-court offense last season, and the Thunder ranked third in half-court offense volume themselves. That mix can create scoring chances, but it can also shorten the game by forcing more trips through set offenses and fewer easy runouts.

That is where Nikola Jokic and Aday Mara enter the picture. The Thunder drafted Mara, a 7-foot-3 big, to throw at Jokic, giving Oklahoma City another body it can use to keep the Denver center working against size and length. The Thunder can also lean on Cason Wallace and Alex Caruso against Jamal Murray, which matters because perimeter resistance can make every Denver possession more crowded before the ball even gets to the paint.

The total looks aggressive against the recent history of this series. Only three of the last 10 meetings between the teams produced 235 or more points, which is a sharp mismatch with a line sitting at 236.5. That is why the Under, even down to 234.5, is the side the numbers keep pointing toward.

Aaron Gordon adds another layer to the board. Since going to Denver in 2021, he has averaged 8.0 rebounds in 21 regular-season and playoff games against Oklahoma City, and he has reached 6 or more rebounds in 14 of those 21 games, a 66.7% rate. In a game where both sides are expected to spend more time in half-court structure, that kind of frontcourt work can matter as much as the headline scoring line.

Isaiah Hartenstein is the other name to watch, especially after he cashed a 3-plus assist prop on Tuesday by finishing with exactly three assists in 17 minutes against the San Antonio Spurs on opening night. He has also averaged nearly 10 more minutes per game against Denver since joining Oklahoma City, which makes his passing lane props more relevant than they would be in a typical regular-season spot. The Thunder are fully healthy, so the question is less about who can play and more about how many minutes each matchup piece actually gets when the game tightens. By the time the ball goes up at 9:30 p.m. ET, the answer to that may decide whether the night belongs to the favorite or to the total.
