A wildfire near Temple Fork in Logan Canyon closed U.S. Highway 89 at both ends Sunday evening, cutting off a route through the canyon and leaving no estimated time for reopening. The fire was named the Blind Hollow Fire and was estimated at 15 acres.
Utah Fire Info said firefighters were responding as the closure took effect, while the Utah Department of Transportation said the highway was shut from Logan and from Garden City. For travelers moving between Logan and Garden City, the closure turned a short drive through the canyon into a detour with no clear end in sight.
Forest Service officials said the fire's growth was not very active, even as crews worked on the ground and a helicopter helped with containment efforts. That gap — a small fire with a road still closed at both ends — is what made Sunday evening stand out for anyone trying to cross the canyon.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation. For now, the main question for drivers is not how the Blind Hollow Fire started, but how long U.S. Highway 89 will stay shut before Logan Canyon opens again.
