The call mattered because Angel City is trying to keep momentum while living with a thin margin for error. Smerud said he is happy with the team being competitive and noted that it has been able to stay on the front foot late in games rather than sinking deep and defending for long stretches.
Gotham’s defense makes that next step harder, but it also clarifies the assignment. Angel City does not need a perfect performance; it needs a cleaner one in the final third and a finish that counts. If it cannot find that edge against the league’s stingiest team, the two-point gap to the playoff line becomes even harder to close.

After Gotham FC, it is set to travel on Wednesday to the North Carolina Courage and then on Monday to Boston Legacy FC, with Smerud expecting Maiara Niehues and Sveindís Jónsdóttir to return from injury on the trip. That is the stretch that will decide whether the draw with Washington was a small step forward or just another night where a point and a disallowed goal were not enough.
