The advice lands during NFL preseason, when fantasy managers are already sorting through late-round decisions and deciding how much draft capital to spend on DST.
That matters because defense is usually treated as an afterthought, the kind of pick people make when the room has moved on and the board is thinning out. NBC Sports is arguing that the choice still affects weekly results, even if the position is usually drafted late and many managers stream defenses one week at a time.
The case for waiting is not built on a hunch. NBC Sports says selecting one of the top three defenses by that year’s ADP gives only a 3.8% chance of landing the top overall fantasy defense, which is a hard number for managers who like to chase safety early. The same guidance says the author will never draft more than one defense out of drafts, though two defenses can make sense later in the season.
That advice comes from offseason research that looked at the defenses that finished top 10 in fantasy football in each of the last five years. The most common stats tied to those finishers were first downs allowed, points per game allowed and third-down conversion rate allowed. Pressure rate, passes defended, turnover rate and explosive play rate allowed followed behind them, and explosive plays were defined as gains of more than 20 yards.
The friction is in how fantasy managers actually play the position. Most people still stream D/ST or take whoever is left, which makes defense look disposable. NBC Sports is pushing back on that habit without pretending the position deserves premium draft capital. The message is not to chase a defense early; it is to avoid wasting a pick on the first one off the board when the numbers say the upside is thin.
There is also a timing element that matters for anyone building a roster now. NBC Sports does not believe in thinking about rest-of-season rankings until about Week 10 or 11, because the defensive landscape changes quickly during the season.
