De'Von Achane did not dress for Saturday's preseason game against the Giants, leaving Miami to sort its backfield without one of its top options. Malik Willis also was not in uniform for the game.
The timing matters because the preseason is where every snap gets divided carefully, and this one changed the rotation before kickoff. Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon were expected to see the bulk of the first-half work, with Donovan Edwards and Carlos Washington also in the mix for offensive reps.
Gordon had already shown what that workload can look like the night before, when he rushed seven times for 39 yards in Miami's 20-7 preseason loss to the Commanders. Wright added six carries for 22 yards, missed on his only target, and even handled one kickoff for no gain. Those are the kinds of touches that become more important when a regular preseason contributor is suddenly out of uniform.
What was not explained was why Achane sat. There was no injury note attached to his absence, and no rest designation was given, even though his non-participation immediately altered how the Dolphins would spread the work. That uncertainty is part of the story now: when a player is absent on game day, the reasons can matter as much as the snap count.
There is some added context around the backfield picture. The Dolphins activated Bell from the active/non-football injury list Monday and Douglas returned to practice Tuesday, two moves that widened the pool of available backs and made every absence more noticeable. For now, though, the cleanest takeaway is simple. Achane was not dressed, the first-half work shifted elsewhere, and the next update people are waiting for is the reason he missed Saturday in the first place.
