Cam Miller set for bigger preseason role as Quinn Ewers limps into Saturday

Cam Miller is set for a much bigger test on Saturday, and the Dolphins may give him as many as three quarters to make it count. Quinn Ewers’ groin injury after a poor showing against the Commanders has opened the door for Miller and Mark Gronowski to see significant time against the Giants.

That is the reason Miller is drawing the most attention now. The Dolphins are in a preseason quarterback evaluation period, and this game may say more about the depth chart than the final score ever could. Ewers is likely out, so the snaps that would have gone to him are now available for Miller, who is trying to turn one of his most important weeks into a real foothold.

Saturday also matters because Miller is not the only one trying to move up. The Dolphins have two other quarterbacks on the roster not named Malik Willis, and Gronowski is part of the same fight for playing time and a possible practice squad spot. Gronowski got his first action on an NFL field after being waived before the Commanders game, which makes this weekend another chance to show he belongs in the mix.

Miller, though, is the one with the most to prove. He did not excite anyone last week, and his practices have been inconsistent, which is why a poor outing now could push Gronowski into a more prominent role behind center. If Miller gets the full workload that is possible, three quarters is a lot of room to make an impression, but it is also enough time for a shaky performance to change the order of things quickly.

The bigger picture is straightforward. At stake is probably not a spot on the final 53-man roster, but the Dolphins are still deciding which quarterback deserves to stay in the conversation for the practice squad, where the NFL’s easier rules have made extra depth more useful than carrying three passers through cutdown season. Miller is trying to show the rest of the NFL that he is worth a look if he gets cut, and Saturday could be the week that decides whether he stays ahead of Gronowski or gives up that ground.

The only real unknown is how much of the game Miller actually gets. If the Dolphins let him work deep into the matchup, he will have a rare chance to settle the competition with volume as much as performance. If he does not take advantage, the pressure will shift fast, and Gronowski may leave Saturday as the quarterback who looks more ready to run with the next opportunity.
