The Boeing 737 was built without main landing gear doors, and that choice still defines the jet nearly six decades later. Instead of covering the main gear wells, Boeing left the wheels exposed when the gear is up, a design that traded a little aerodynamic efficiency for less weight, fewer parts and a simpler airplane.
That question is drawing attention now because the Boeing 737 remains one of the most visible airliners in service, even as later variants have pushed far beyond the short-haul mission that shaped the original design. The airplane that began life for smaller, less developed 1960s airfields eventually became a mainline jet flying major routes, making an old engineering decision look more unusual with every generation that followed.
The layout is easy to spot once you know what to look for. The Boeing 737 has two wheels on its nose gear and two sets of two wheels on the main gear, but no doors to close over those main wells. On an Airbus A320 or a Boeing 757, the gear is hidden behind doors. On the 737, the wheels sit flush with the body when retracted, with a hubcap and rubber seal helping preserve aerodynamics even without the extra covering.
That difference was not about the jet riding too low to the ground. It was about purpose. The original 737-100 and 737-200 were designed strictly for short-haul flying, and Boeing wanted the airplane to be as robust and as simple as possible. Fewer moving panels meant fewer things that could break, a practical advantage for airlines using rougher, less developed fields where durability mattered as much as performance.
Landing gear doors would have helped the airplane cut drag and save some fuel, but the gain had to be weighed against added weight and added complexity. For a plane built to fly short routes, that tradeoff did not make sense. The choice fit the mission Boeing had in mind, even if it left the 737 with a more exposed underside than most other airliners.
The harder problem is what comes next. Adding landing gear doors to future 737 variants would require extensive reengineering work, which would make the airplane more expensive to develop. That is why the old design still matters: the 737 MAX 7, 737 MAX 8, 737 MAX 9 and 737 MAX 10 all live inside a structure shaped by decisions made long before the jet became a global workhorse. Modern airliners are often refreshed instead of replaced because designing a new one is hard, slow and costly, and the 737 program is now nearly 60 years old. Its exposed gear wells are not a quirk left behind by accident. They are the visible mark of a deliberate choice that still costs less to live with than to undo.
