Fernando Mendoza turned a fourth-quarter interview into the night’s sharpest moment when he told Laura Rutledge to “Please tell Mr. Buck I say, ‘Hello.'” The Raiders quarterback had just helped finish a 22-20 win over the Houston Texans, but it was his careful greeting to Joe Buck that got the broadcast crew laughing and set off another viral Mendoza Football clip.
Buck had opened the exchange with a simple, friendly, “Hi, Laura! Hi, Fernando!” Mendoza answered at the end of the interview with the formal line that made the moment travel, and Rutledge, Buck and Troy Aikman all laughed. When Rutledge asked why he did not extend the same greeting to Aikman, Mendoza said, “Oh, of course,” and added that Aikman was already a legend, while Buck needed some love. Buck shot back, “You see, there it is. Back to Mr. Buck,” then said Mendoza was unique and that he says all the right things. Aikman added, “What a refreshing personality he is,” and called him easy to root for.
The exchange landed because it came on live television, in the middle of a preseason game, with Mendoza’s play still part of the picture. On his second pass of the night, he threw an 80-yard pick-six to Texans fourth-round rookie linebacker Wade Woodaz, and he finished the first half with eight completions on 15 attempts for 86 yards and one interception. That mix of mistakes and charm is what has made Mendoza stand out so quickly: he can draw as much attention for his manner as for his throws, and he has now done it more than once.
That is also why this version of the moment matters more than a one-off quip. Mendoza had already gone viral in a previous preseason start, and this latest interview makes the pattern plain — he is becoming one of those rare rookies who can turn a routine television hit into its own event. What is not yet known is how long the attention will last once the games count, but for now Mendoza has given the broadcast and the Raiders another clip that people will keep replaying.
