Jaxon Kohler has entered the transfer portal after gaining a fifth year of eligibility through a July Colorado injunction, opening the door to one more college season after four years at Michigan State. The move comes now, with Michigan State already set for the coming season and Kohler no longer on the roster plans.

That timing matters because Kohler was not a bit player. He averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds last season while shooting 38.9% from 3-point range and 50.0% from the floor, numbers that made him a major frontcourt presence for Michigan State. He finished his Spartans career with 872 points, 728 rebounds and 108 assists, a line that shows how central he became over four seasons.

The extra year traces back to the Colorado injunction in July, which gave his entire 2022 recruiting class a fifth season. That legal change is why Kohler can keep playing at the college level even after four years at Michigan State, and why his name is now moving through the portal instead of simply closing out a career in East Lansing.

Michigan State had already moved to fill two vacancies up front by adding freshman Ethan Taylor and transfer Anton Bonke, so Kohler’s departure had been anticipated even before it became official. Tom Izzo made clear after a Sweet 16 loss to UConn that he valued the players who stayed, saying, “I love those guys just about more than anybody,” and also, “Because everybody can leave now. Hell, everybody can leave. So they stood strong. Never did we even think about them leaving. And they got better, and we got better.”

For Kohler, the open question is not whether he will play again, but where. He is now a proven rebounder and inside-out scorer with one season of eligibility left, and whichever program gets him will be adding a finished product rather than a project.
