Polaroid has turned its instant cameras, film and accessories into a Pokémon collection, with preorder sales set to begin on August 25 in the US, Canada and the UK. The lineup pairs limited-edition character designs with existing camera models, and a global release is expected on October 5.
The timing is tied to the 30th anniversary of Pokémon, and that is the reason this drop lands now. Buyers looking for Pokemon cameras will find two main models in the collection: the Polaroid Go Gen 3, priced at $99.99, and the Polaroid Now Gen 3, priced at $139.99. The smaller Go model comes in a bright yellow Pikachu finish and a pink-and-blue Sylveon version, while the Now model uses a red-and-white Poké Ball design. All three cameras are sold with matching straps.
Polaroid is also pushing the idea beyond the cameras themselves. Double packs of Go Color instant film cost $24.99 each and come in Pikachu or Sylveon designs, while the larger Color i-Type film costs $22.99 and carries silhouettes of different Pokémon around the frames. Even the plastic cards ejected when a new pack is loaded are part of the theme, with different Pokémon silhouettes printed on them.
That is where the collection separates itself from a simpler logo swap. Five years ago, Fujifilm had a Pokémon collaboration, but Polaroid’s version stretches across film and accessories as well as hardware. The cameras are not new machines built for the theme; they are familiar models dressed for the anniversary, which keeps the pitch squarely on design and collectability rather than new camera features.
The accessory line follows the same formula. Polaroid is selling a $24.99 case, a $14.99 shoulder strap and a $24.99 photo album for the smaller Go Gen 3 cameras, all in red-and-white Poké Ball styling. For collectors, the appeal is obvious. For everyone else, the question is whether the first preorder wave on August 25 will be broad enough to satisfy demand before the October 5 release rolls in.
