Princess Eugenie has revealed the Eugenie baby name: her daughter is Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. She shared the news on Instagram on Monday, Aug. 17, two weeks after the child was born, turning a quiet royal family arrival into the latest update many readers were waiting for.

Eugenie wrote that the family had welcomed their girl to the world two weeks earlier and had spent that time in a “special, cosy and love-filled” spell. The name matters because it confirms the identity of the couple’s third child and first daughter, and because the baby now sits 15th in line to the British throne, pushing Prince Edward down to No. 16.

Buckingham Palace announced the safe arrival on Aug. 4, saying the baby was born on Monday, Aug. 3, weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces and arrived at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. The family already includes two boys, August and Ernest, and Eugenie said Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers. Her announcement did more than end the wait for a name. It also showed how quickly a private birth becomes a public royal milestone.

There is, though, one part of the name that still invites curiosity. Eugenie said Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank honors three people she and Jack Brooksbank love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother, but she identified only one of them in her post. That leaves the rest of the tribute unspoken, even as the family settles into life with a daughter who is already reshaping the line of succession and adding a fifth grandchild for Andrew.

Eugenie, the youngest daughter of Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, is 12th in line to the British throne and is not a working royal. She and Brooksbank married in October 2018 and split their time between the United Kingdom and Portugal, a life that now includes one more child and one unanswered detail: which two other loved ones are woven into Adelaide’s name.
