Silicosis Cases Among California Countertop Workers Surge Past 570

Silicosis cases among California countertop workers surged to 571 from 2023 through August of this year, more than ten times the 47 cases reported from 2019 through 2022. The disease, an incurable and often fatal lung condition, is hitting Latino men who cut artificial stone slabs and breathe in silica dust on the job.

That sharp rise is why the numbers are drawing attention now. A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that about 98% of the reported cases are among Latino men, with about half of all cases in L.A. County, where the work is centered in The San Fernando Valley. The median age at diagnosis is 46, and the median age at death is 52, which means many workers are being struck in the middle of their working lives.

The state has also tracked 32 deaths since 2019, along with 72 workers who have undergone lung transplants and 51 who have been referred for transplant evaluations. Those figures point to a disease that is not only spreading, but advancing fast. The workers identified in the study reported 16 to 25 years of silica dust exposure, long enough for the damage to build quietly until the lungs fail.

Silica dust is embedded in the stone slabs and becomes dangerous when cutting and finishing release fine particles that can lodge deep in the lungs. David Michaels said engineered stone countertops cannot be manufactured safely and economically, calling it a product that is not needed and is harming hundreds of workers in California and probably thousands more across the country. Yet fabrication continued, and workers kept reporting long-term exposure even after OSHA first issued a silica exposure standard in 2016, when artificial stone countertop work was still relatively new.

The gap is as stark as the numbers. California has now documented a large and worsening cluster of a preventable occupational disease, but the facts do not show a new enforcement move, a rule change or an industry shift to match the scale of the harm. For workers already diagnosed, the path has been brutal; for everyone still on the saws and polishing lines, the unanswered question is how much longer the exposure will be allowed to continue.
