Marvel has shown Troy Baker as Nathaniel Essex in Marvel's Wolverine, giving the first look at the man who will become Mr. Sinister before the game arrives on September 15. In the clip shared by @BlueThunderReal, Logan frees Essex from a debilitating collar and hears him say, “Logan, you came back...”
That matters because Mr. Sinister is one of the X-Men's most notable villains, yet this version of Essex is being shown first as just a man. Baker's portrayal is part of Marvel's Wolverine, which is set in the same world as Marvel's Spider-Man and will put Essex at the center of a story that has already been framed around conflict rather than clean heroism.
Marcus Smith, the game's creative director, has made that point plain. He said Essex and Bolivar Trask are “these tentpoles by which our moral leanings go,” and added that the game is built around “conflicts,” “degrees of differences,” and pairings that are “never super black and white.” In that setup, Essex and Logan appear to be allies, but Essex's view that mutants are superior leaves room for a turn that could carry him toward the villain fans know from Marvel.
The rest of the cast only sharpens that pressure. Marvel's Wolverine also features Jean Grey, Lady Deathstrike and Omega Red, while Insomniac Games has already confirmed that Trask, his Sentinels, The Hand and Lady Deathstrike will act as antagonists. That leaves Essex in a more unstable place than a simple villain cameo: he is being introduced before his full Mr. Sinister form, with his path still open and his relationship to Logan doing the work of setting it up.
For now, the reveal answers the basic question fans had been waiting on. Baker is playing Nathaniel Essex, Marvel is using Marvel's Wolverine to stage his on-screen return in 2026, and the game is presenting the character before the gray skin, red eyes and cape that usually define Mr. Sinister. What it does not yet answer is how long Essex has been trapped before Logan frees him, or how quickly the man in the collar becomes the mutant mastermind Marvel has been holding back.
