Disney has set its live-action Tangled remake for theaters on March 31, 2028, and Kathryn Hahn will play Mother Gothel. The announcement gives the project a firm date more than a year away and confirms the key casting choice that will anchor one of Disney’s most watched remakes.
Hahn introduced the role during the Disney Entertainment Showcase, calling Mother Gothel “stunning, hilarious, fab, kind, generous to a fault,” a description that lands with a wink for anyone who knows the character as the animated story’s villain. That contrast is part of why the casting drew attention so quickly: the part is meant to be dangerous and controlling, but Hahn framed it with warmth and comic precision.
The live-action Tangled is filming in Spain, and the first look at the kingdom of Corona points to Disney drawing from medieval Spain and Italy for the fictional world. That detail matters because the remake is not just revisiting a popular title from 2010; it is also signaling how it plans to translate the original film’s look into a live-action setting. Teagan Croft appears as Rapunzel in unofficial first-look images, while Milo Manheim appears as Flynn Ryder, and the costumes for both characters are said to be pretty much exactly the same as the cartoon versions.
Those images also suggest Disney is keeping other familiar pieces in place, including the Stabbington brothers. But the release date and casting reveal leave the biggest question untouched: how much of Tangled will be reimagined, and how much will be lifted straight from the animated film.
