Matti Schmid turned one shot into a small surge at TPC Southwind. He made his first career hole-in-one on the par-3 fourth hole during the second round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis.
The tee shot covered 173 yards, landed a few feet from the cup and then bounced in. For a player trying to climb the FedExCup standings, it was the kind of moment that can change a round in an instant.
Schmid needed more than a highlight to stay alive in the opening event of the FedExCup Playoffs. He arrived ranked 69th out of 70 players for the FedExCup title after opening with a 73, a position that left very little margin if he wanted to keep moving toward the next week.
That is why the ace mattered beyond the scorecard. There is no cut line at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, but only the top 50 players at the St. Jude will move on to the BMW Championship starting Aug. 20 at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis. Schmid still has a chance to make that field, and the hole-in-one gave him a much-needed lift at the right time.
The shot did not solve everything. A single hole-in-one cannot erase a slow start, and it does not guarantee a place in the next tournament. But at a playoff event where each round can move a player several spots, Schmid’s ace gave him the kind of momentum that can matter when the week is measured in finishes, not just fireworks.
For Schmid, the moment at TPC Southwind was both a personal first and a timely reminder that one swing can still reshape a week.
