France will host Italy on Friday, October 2, at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis in the third matchday of the Nations League, and the home side will do it without Kylian Mbappé. It is France’s first home match in this edition after two straight away games, a sharp turn for a team that has opened with two wins and now leads the group with a perfect record.
That search interest makes sense because this is not just another fixture on the calendar. France beat Turkey 1-0 in Kocaeli, then followed that with another 1-0 win over Belgium in Brussels, with Michael Olise scoring late to keep the run alive. Italy arrives with a split start of its own, having lost 2-0 to Belgium before beating Turkey 4-1, a match in which Alessandro Bastoni, Davide Frattesi, Michael Kayode and Francesco Pio Esposito all scored.
The missing name, though, is the one that changes the feel of the night. Mbappé scored against Turkey before being injured and leaving the French camp, and France now has to protect its perfect start without its captain. The injury has already ruled him out of the squad, but the open question is how much time he will lose after the setback and whether France can keep the same edge without him in a home game that carries immediate group weight.
There is also a practical side for viewers. In the United States, the match will be shown on Fox Sports 1, with streaming available through fuboTV, ViX and FOX One. In Mexico, it will be carried by Sky Sports Mexico. Jesús Gil Manzano of Spain will referee the match, which is scheduled for 14:45 EE.UU (Este), 12:45 MEX and 20:45 ESP.
France has built the better position so far, but this is the first test of that start in front of its own crowd and without the player most capable of changing the game in a single moment. If the perfect record survives, it will say plenty about the depth around Mbappé; if it does not, the injury that forced him out will be impossible to separate from the result.
