Mackenzie Dern says her UFC 330 title defense against Gillian Robertson is not built on bad blood, even after Robertson reportedly said she does not like the champion very much. Dern said she has nothing against Robertson and added that she has never even met her.
The champion spoke on Tuesday about the matchup, which has become a search target because the talk around it has shifted from rankings to remarks. Dern said Robertson was the one who seemed to be trying to build the tension, pointing to comments about submissions and grappling made on Joe Rogan’s podcast and in the clips circulating from it. Dern said she did not know who Robertson was and rejected the idea that she is coming into the fight with any personal grudge.
What Dern does like is the style of the matchup. She described Robertson as a jiu-jitsu girl and said she likes fighting people who are on win streaks, especially those who can test her on the mat. Robertson enters the bout on a five-fight win streak, and Dern said that kind of run makes a title defense more meaningful because stopping it carries weight beyond the belt itself. She also said there has been back-and-forth about who has better submissions and better grappling in MMA, which has given the fight some edge without turning it into a feud.
That framing matters because Dern won the UFC championship this past year after building her own reputation on grappling, long before the belt was hers. The UFC offered the matchup after months of rumors that Zhang Weili would eventually return to the 115-pound division, leaving Dern and Robertson to take the fight that surfaced instead. For Dern, the comparison is straightforward: when she fought Virna Jandiroba, Jandiroba was on a four or five fight win streak, and she sees Robertson in much the same way now.
Dern’s view is that this is a champion trying to shut down momentum, not a fighter settling a personal score. If Robertson wants the same kind of chess match on the canvas that Dern has spent her career welcoming, UFC 330 will decide whose grappling matters more when the title is on the line.
