Jordan Lyle is back on the field and back in the conversation for the Miami Hurricanes after a high-ankle sprain pushed him to the side for much of last season. The junior from Fort Lauderdale said he is carrying “a lot of pent-up anger” into the new season after not getting the chance to work through that frustration in games.
That is why Lyle matters now. He was the opening-week starter last season, and before the injury he was viewed as Miami’s best game-breaker going into the 2025 season. But this is not a clean path back to the top of the depth chart. Mark Fletcher is the starter at running back after rushing for 1,192 yards last season, more than 500 of them during the College Football Playoff, so Lyle is trying to force his way into a larger role rather than step into an empty job.
Mario Cristobal said he sees the same runner Miami had a year ago, only with better physical traits. He said Lyle has taken strength and conditioning seriously, is healthy and looks like a full-speed player. That matters for a team that already has other offensive playmakers in Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney, because any version of Lyle close to his best gives the Hurricanes another runner who can change a game in one play.
The friction is that promise and pecking order are not the same thing. Lyle opened last season ahead of Fletcher, but the injury altered everything, and Fletcher used the opportunity to seize the backfield. Lyle said he felt he disappointed his people last year, which makes this fall camp more than a routine comeback. He is not just trying to get healthy; he is trying to prove the season he lost was not the version of himself Miami should remember.
The next step is simple to describe and hard to earn: Lyle has to turn his health into snaps, then snaps into trust, while Fletcher keeps the starter’s job he already claimed. If Lyle keeps looking like the player Cristobal described, Miami may have a two-back problem it can welcome. If he does not, his return will be remembered as the comeback that stopped just short of the role he wanted back.
