Kamari Ramsey made the first interception of his career just before halftime, turning a Chargers first-and-10 deep in Houston territory into a sudden chance for the Houston Texans. He jumped a Trey Lance pass and brought it back to the Chargers' 48, giving Houston the kind of short field that can change a half in a hurry.
For a rookie safety, that is the kind of play that announces itself. Ramsey's interception came with the Chargers already sitting just outside the red zone, which made the takeaway even more valuable because Houston did not have to travel far to try to turn it into points.
That is where the drive stalled. Houston could not make the most of the turnover, and as time expired in the first half rookie kicker Chris Freeman missed a 59-yard field goal. The takeaway had handed the Texans a clean opening, but the chance slipped away before the break.
It left Ramsey with a milestone and Houston with little to show for it. The interception will count as his first, but the missed kick meant the Texans went into halftime without cashing in on the best opening they had created on the play.
That sequence is the part that will matter after the final score is forgotten. Ramsey gave Houston a swing moment. The Texans just did not turn it into points.
