A Tornado Warning was issued Thursday evening for parts of Tooele County near Dugway and Rush Valley after the National Weather Service said a strong thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was moving toward the area. The warning remained in effect until 6:30 p.m.
That made the next few minutes the reason people were searching for a tornado warning in Utah: the danger was immediate, and the guidance was blunt. At 5:35 p.m., the National Weather Service said the storm was moving east toward the area, and by 5:46 p.m. it was reported eight miles east of Skull Valley, or 13 miles southwest of Grantsville, moving northeast at 50 miles per hour.
The alert was not framed as a confirmed tornado report. It was an active warning based on what the storm could do, and that distinction matters. The National Weather Service warned that flying debris would be dangerous to anyone caught without shelter, and said mobile homes could be damaged or destroyed. It also warned of damage to roofs, windows and vehicles, along with likely tree damage.
People in the warned area were told to take cover now, move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, and avoid windows. Those outdoors, in a mobile home or in a vehicle were told to get to the closest substantial shelter and protect themselves from flying debris. Whether the storm produced a tornado or caused damage in Tooele County was not answered in the warning itself, and that is the part residents would have been watching as the clock moved toward 6:30 p.m.
