Motagua could not finish the job at home. A 1-1 draw with Cartaginés at the Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés kept the group leaders from sealing an early place in the quarterfinals of the Copa Centroamericana de la Concacaf and pushed Group D into the final matchday with everything still unsettled.
The result mattered because Motagua had been in control of its own path and still left with only seven points from three matches. That is enough to stay first in Group D for now, but not enough to close the door. In this tournament, the top two teams advance, and the draw means Motagua will have to finish the job in Guatemala rather than celebrate in Tegucigalpa.
Javier López now takes his team into the most important trip of the group stage. Motagua will visit Municipal in Guatemala on the last day, and the math is simple enough for a team at the top but not yet safe: a draw or a win sends Motagua into the elimination round, while a loss would put its place in serious risk. Municipal sits second in the group with four points and one match in hand, which is why the road trip now carries the weight of a knockout game before the knockout round has even started.
Cartaginés also left Honduras with its hopes intact, though only barely. The point lifted it to two in the tournament and keeps a narrow route open, but that route runs through two remaining home matches against Hankook Verdes and FAS, and it also depends on a favorable result in the match between Motagua and Municipal. Even then, the margin is thin. Club Deportivo FAS has no points after its debut and still has mathematical chances of advancing, which is part of what makes Group D so difficult to sort out after one draw in Tegucigalpa.
That is the pressure Motagua created for itself by failing to beat Cartaginés on home soil. It remains in front, but the group leader has not yet locked the door, and the final answer now comes in Guatemala: win or draw, and the path opens; lose, and the table that looked settled in Tegucigalpa becomes a fight again.
