The New England Patriots signed running back Hassan Haskins and waived-injured rookie running back Myles Montgomery, turning one roster move into a swap that changes the depth chart immediately. New England announced the transaction as part of a broader set of personnel changes, but Haskins and Montgomery were the center of it.
Haskins, 26, arrives with more NFL mileage than the usual mid-summer addition. He entered the league as a fourth-round draft pick by the Tennessee Titans out of Michigan in the 2022 NFL Draft, then spent the last two seasons with the L.A. Chargers after Tennessee released him at the end of training camp in 2024. In 44 regular season games with one start, he has 76 rushing attempts for 229 yards and two touchdowns, plus 18 catches for 199 yards and a score. He has also handled 28 kickoff returns for 646 yards.
That background gives New England a back who has already survived multiple roster turns and has filled several roles. Last season with the Chargers, Haskins played in 12 games and posted 17 rushing attempts for 47 yards, four receptions for 13 yards and eight kickoff returns for 197 yards. For a team making room by moving on from Montgomery, that kind of versatility is the point.
Montgomery, 23, had only just entered the picture. New England signed him as a rookie free agent out of UCF on May 8, 2026, and the Patriots are now moving him to waived-injured status in the same announcement. He is 5-foot-10 and 205 pounds and spent two seasons at UCF from 2024 to 2025 after three seasons at Cincinnati from 2021 to 2023. In 41 college games, he ran 274 times for 1,546 yards and 11 touchdowns. What is not clear is what injury prompted the move, or whether New England will keep him in the organization through an injury settlement.
The Patriots did not frame this as a minor housekeeping note. By signing Haskins while waiving-injured Montgomery, they are replacing a rookie with a veteran runner who has already logged NFL snaps, carries and kickoff work. That is the story of the day in New England: less a fresh addition than an immediate reshuffling of the running back room.
