S.W.A.T. Exiles has already been renewed for Season 2, even though viewers have not seen the first episode yet. Shemar Moore broke the news in a video on Instagram on Monday, August 10, saying the spinoff had been picked up again and that shooting on the next season will begin in a couple months.
That makes the Starz series an unusual launch: it is set to premiere on Friday, September 25, and new episodes will stream weekly on Fridays on the Starz app and across the network’s streaming and on-demand platforms. Moore returns as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, with Ronen Rubinstein as Jude, Freddy Miyares as Ethan, Zyra Gorecki as Cassidy, Adain Bradley as Malik and Lucy Barrett as Sammy. Jay Harrington is back as Sergeant David "Deacon" Kay in Season 1 of S.W.A.T. Exiles, while Patrick St. Esprit returns as Commander Robert Hicks and David Lim returns as Victor Tan.
The early pickup signals confidence in the spinoff before the audience has had any chance to judge it. The series is built around Hondo being pulled back into action to lead a last-chance experimental S.W.A.T. unit made up of untested and unpredictable young recruits, and the logline says he has to bridge a generational divide and turn a group of outsiders into a team that can protect the city and save the program that made him who he is.
What remains unclear is how quickly Starz expects to move this franchise forward after the premiere. Moore said Season 2 filming starts in a couple of months, which points to a fast turnaround and suggests the renewal came from a broader plan for the series, not just the reaction to its launch.
