A newly released video shows Jamie Komoroski after the deadly 2023 Folly Beach DUI crash, repeatedly asking the officer who brought her into the room if she could call her father. The footage surfaced after Komoroski was already sentenced to 25 years in prison for the crash that killed Samantha Miller and injured Aric Hutchinson and two relatives.
The video is drawing renewed attention because it captures the moments after the wreck, when the case was still being built and the facts were still being gathered. Komoroski repeatedly refused a breathalyzer test, then was taken to MUSC for blood samples that were sent to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division for testing. That testing later put her blood alcohol level at 0.261%, more than three times the legal limit in South Carolina.
Investigators said Komoroski was driving 65 mph when she slammed into the back of a golf cart on April 28, 2023, at 10 p.m. in the 1200 block of East Ashley Avenue. Aric Hutchinson’s family members were taking him and Miller to their rental home hours after they got married when the crash happened, turning what should have been the end of a wedding night into a fatal collision. Miller died at the scene.
The newly released video also shows the contrast that has kept the case in view: Komoroski’s repeated requests to call her father and her refusal to take a breath test, alongside the later evidence that she told officers she had a beer and a drink with tequila about an hour before the crash and said she was at an eight on a scale of one to ten. That combination of behavior and evidence helps explain why prosecutors ultimately secured guilty pleas to felony DUI, two counts of DUI causing great bodily injury or death, and reckless homicide before the 25-year sentence was imposed.
What remains unanswered is why the video was released now, years after the crash and after the case had already ended in prison time. The footage does not change the sentence, but it does give the public a clearer view of how the arrest unfolded and why the fatal Folly Beach DUI remains a painful record of a night that ended with one death, serious injuries and a long prison term.
