Oreo China and KFC have released a limited-edition cookie in China that swaps the usual creme for a filling meant to taste like Original Recipe fried chicken. The product went on sale on July 31 and keeps Oreo’s familiar chocolate wafers, but the packaging turns red and white and puts fried chicken beside a stack of cookies.

The release is the latest sign that Oreo and KFC are willing to push their brands into stranger territory for a limited run. One wafer carries KFC’s logo where the Oreo mark usually sits, and the cookie is part of Oreo’s Playful Time Travel collection, which also includes a Retro Popcorn flavor.

That second flavor is being sold separately in an 87g box or as part of a 174g bundle, and both items are listed on JD. For consumers in China, that means the collaboration is already on shelves and online. For everyone else, the picture is less clear: there has been no official word on a wider release outside China.

The collection fits a pattern that Oreo has leaned into before. For April Fools’ Day this year, it sold real dill pickle cookies, and it has also issued a Thanksgiving tin with Cranberry Sauce, Pumpkin Pie, Turkey & Stuffing, Creamed Corn, Sweet Potato and Caramel Apple Pie flavors. KFC has its own track record of odd tie-ins too, from a gravy ice cream with Hackney Gelato last year to a Simpsons menu more recently.

What this launch shows is simple enough: Oreo China and KFC are testing just how far a familiar snack can be stretched before it stops feeling familiar. Right now, the answer is in China, on a limited basis, and there is still no sign that the fried-chicken cookie will be leaving it any time soon.
