Valencia has opened talks for Sergi Roberto as it looks for an immediate fix on the right side of defence. The move would cost no transfer fee, and the club is already negotiating the terms of a possible deal.
The interest makes sense because Carlos Corberán is left with only Dimitri Foulquier as a specialist for that position. Thomas Meunier had been close to joining Mestalla, but he chose Sunderland instead, leaving Valencia without a move that had looked advanced.
Roberto, 34, is available after ending his spell at Como, where he played 37 matches across two seasons. He can operate as a full-back, a holding midfielder or as a central midfielder, which gives Valencia flexibility at a time when the squad needs a quick answer on the right.
There is, however, a clear risk in the equation. Roberto’s time at Como was interrupted by several muscle injuries, and that raises doubts about whether he can offer the regular availability Valencia needs. His resume is not in question: he arrived in Italia in August 2024 after leaving Barcelona, where Xavi Hernández had already ruled out his continuity and where he closed a 14-year spell in the first team as captain, with seven Liga titles and two Champions League crowns to his name.
Valencia has already strengthened midfield with Aliou Dieng and Guido Rodríguez, while Pepelu remains an important piece. That leaves the right flank as the priority, and the club’s next step is straightforward: see whether Roberto’s salary demands fit the deal it is willing to make. If the numbers work, Valencia gets experience and versatility without a transfer fee; if they do not, the search for a specialist on the right continues.
